About the Harmful Language Review Group

The Harmful Language Review Work Group is a subgroup of the LSP DEIAA Work Group. The group is charged with carrying out the approved process for changing or removing subject terminology from shared records.

Meeting Schedule

The group formed November 2023, and meets monthly on Zoom during the academic year moving forward. Additional meetings may be scheduled as needed. The schedule for 2023-24 is below:

  • November 30, 2023, 2pm-3pm
  • January 25, 2024, 1pm-2pm
  • February 25, 2024, 1pm-2pm
  • March 28, 2024, 1pm-2pm
  • April 25, 2024, 1pm-2pm
  • May 23, 2024, 1pm-2pm

Definition of a Harmful Term

"Within the context of diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism, a harmful term is a word, term, or phrase that is dehumanizing, stigmatizing, or historically demeaning to members of marginalized groups or socioculturally inappropriate when it is a term co-opted by members not belonging to a specific marginalized group. This may include words or phrases containing racist, sexist, white supremacist, ableist, classist, transphobic, body shaming, or homophobic language or depictions." - Process to remove/replace harmful subject terms

What terms can be submitted to the form for the group's review?

The work group focuses on subject headings only. We will review subject headings from any data source (for example Network Zone or Institution Zone bibliographic records or Central Discovery Index).

What are subject headings?

Subject headings are terminology that capture the essence of a what a work (a book, an article, or other resource) is about. Subject headings (aka subjects or topics in OneSearch) may be single words or phrases that appear in a list on the OneSearch page details for the title (Figure A), or used as a search tool for filtering (Figure B).
